History

WMS Gaming was founded in 1943 by Walter H. Frei, Harry E. Williams, and Thaddeus Kostrowicki. The company has been primarily engaged in designing, developing, manufacturing, and marketing electric slot machines for casinos and amusement arcades. In addition to slot machine gaming technology, WMS has supplied other casino equipment such as roulette tables, blackjack, and keno games. In 1959 WMS entered into a licensing agreement with Williams Electronics, Inc., which allowed it to use certain patents developed by that company for its line of slot machines. A significant development came in 1988 when WMS acquired the assets of Gambling Device Manufacturing Company, a gaming device engineering firm founded by Roger E. Sharpe, who had publicly opened the first bingo machine in 1973. The acquisition gave them an electronic-wagering technology on which they based their subsequent developments. In 1993 the company introduced its first video slot machine, titled Reel them In.

In 1996 WMS acquired Casino Data Systems, a producer of custom-designed slot machines, and its main competitor, GDE Systems. This transaction brought into the fold the ‘Shelby,’ a popular two-and five-coin video poker machine. The company also began to expand its mechanical reels and cabinets for the international market, which GDE had developed. 1999 saw WMS making another acquisition, buying out Alliance Gaming Corporation’s interest in International Game Technology (IGT). The purchase was a reflection of the shift in preference towards video slot machines and video poker variants. The company also owns patents for several gaming devices such as System ’96, System ’97, and the system used in Reel them In.

Online Casino

In 2008 WMS introduced a producer of online casino software under the name WagerWorks powered by Microgaming, and in 2010 they acquired Big Time Gaming (BTG). BTG is now owned by Scientific Gaming which was initially established as a subsidiary of Bally Technologies but then spun off into its entity in 2014. Currently, WMS has been repositioning itself from an entertainment product manufacturer to a supplier of systems to land-based and online casino operators.
